Smithfield gardens was founded in 1972 when Bill Pinkham and Norman Beal purchased Cold Springs Nursery in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. The property was used primarily to propagate ornamental plants, but soon after, the partners began offering landscaping services as well.
In 1974, Smithfield Gardens opened a second location to operate a retail store on Rte. 17 in Suffolk. It was here that Bill’s wife Linda began putting her horticultural knowledge and experience to use in the store full time. The Pinkham’s bought out Norman’s interest in the company and changed the name of the store to Plants & Pots. In 1977, the site of our current location was purchased; a larger garden center was built and the name was changed back to Smithfield Gardens. Over the years, the company grew and the facilities expanded.
Smithfield Gardens’ reputation also grew as a place where people buy quality plants from knowledgeable professionals, and as the regional source of distinctive landscapes. This reputation continues under the current ownership of Tom Conway, who bought the company from the Pinkham’s when they retired in 2000. Tom began working part-time at Smithfield Gardens in 1988 and continued during breaks from school until he graduated from Radford University, joining the company full-time in 1993.
Tom is proud that Smithfield Gardens is still a locally owned, family run, independent business with a strong investment in the Hampton Roads community.
