Soils & Mulches- We carry a variety of planting soils and top soils, several of which are organic and some come spiked with a little fertilizer. Our soil additives include a number of composts, manures and conditioners, and we also use and recommend Permatil to ensure proper drainage. We have bagged mulch and load your own bulk mulch which is double shredded hardwood bark. If you need a large amount of soil, compost or mulch, we offer bulk delivery.

Greener Grass – Tidewater Virginia is a transition zone for turf grass which can sometimes frustrate gardeners in search of the perfect lawn.  While the cool season grasses stay green through the winter here, they struggle in our summers.  More and more we recommend the warm season grasses such as Bermuda, Zoysia and St. Augustine for their ease of growth and lower environmental impact.  We can help you navigate the transition zone and find the right grass and the right products for your lawn.

Garden Hardware – Some of the same tools that we use in our gardens at home can be seen on the shelves at Smithfield Gardens.  We love Felco pruners, Japanese weeders and Atlas nitrile gloves.  Several of us also swear by soaker hoses made from recycled tires to keep our gardens nice and moist.

Garden ShopOrganic Solutions – Over the past few years we have been trying to fill more of our shelves with environmentally friendly, organic products – including fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, animal repellants and fungicides.  Whenever possible we seek products that carry the OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) label which guarantees that the product was approved for use in organic farming situations. With a “greener” eye we’ve expanded our line of organic products with Espoma, Fox Farm, Happy Frog, Peace of Mind, and Liquid Fence being some of our top sellers.

People – Perhaps the most important thing we offer here is professional advice.  If you have a gardening question or are having trouble with a plant (whether you bought it here or not) please come talk to us about it.  We will make our best diagnosis and recommend a course for treatment, and if we do not know what the right answer is, we will make every effort to find out.
