Annuals

Because so many of us here are avid gardeners ourselves our selections of annuals and tropical plants reflect an ongoing search for colorful, easy-care flowers that can take our heat and humidity in stride. We love our annual vines and have a local grower specially produce them—to save you time and guarantee success. We stock reliable Proven Winner selections and always experiment with new colors of sun coleus. Unusual container combinations are also one of our specialties.

While we do carry many varieties of annuals for both sun and shade, the following are a few of our favorites.

Dragon Wing Begonia (Begonia hybrid)

If you are looking for something beyond Impatiens for color in the shade, then consider the Dragon Wing.  The thick fleshy foliage will remind you of the tropics, and the red or pink flowers will bloom from late spring into fall.  If you want, you can pot them up in the fall to bring inside as a houseplant.

Diamond Frost ® Euphorbia (Euphorbia graminea ‘Inneuphdia’)

This mounding annual performs supremely well in full to part sun, it can put up with heat and drought, and it will bloom from spring to the first freeze.  This plant is virtually foolproof.

Snow Princess ® Lobularia (Lobularia hybrid ‘Inlbusnopr’)

Don’t let this diminutive darling’s size fool you; she can bloom from late spring to frost with sweet honey-scented clusters of white flowers.  Snow Princess prefers full to partial sun and is good for the front of the border or spilling over walls or in a hanging basket.

Lantana (Lantana sp.)

While we truly love our perennial Lantana ‘Miss Huff’, we are equally smitten with her annual cousins.  Lantanas will bloom from late spring through the first deep freeze of late fall.  They come in a wide range of colors, attract butterflies, and few summer annuals are as sun and drought tolerant.  Look for two of our favorites, ‘Anne Marie’ and ‘New Gold’.

Supertunia ® Vista Bubblegum (Petunia hybrid ‘USTUNI6001′)

If you thought you knew Petunias, then you need to think again.  This variety is vigorous, disease resistant, blooms from spring to fall, more drought tolerant, thrives in full to part sun and best of all is self cleaning.

Sun Coleus (Solenostemon scutellarioides)

Man (or woman) can not garden with flowers alone, foliage is critical, and Sun Coleus really provide a punch of color.  The leaves of this plant can range from the inkiest blacks, rich reds, sunset oranges, limey greens to everything in between in multiple combinations of colors and patterns.  Unlike traditional Coleus these can thrive in full to partial sun.
