Edibles

Edible Plants Smithfield GardensOne of the more recently publicized trends in gardening has been to grow your own fruits and vegetables.  Of course for many people this is nothing new, but something they have always done.  In late winter our extensive seed collection arrives, as well as seed starting supplies.  Depending on the weather, we begin offering cold tolerant vegetables in March, and as the weather warms, more varieties become available.

We also carry a great selection of herbs, both tender and hardy.  For fruits we offer strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, apples, peaches, European and Asian pears, cherries, plums, figs, pomegranates, grapes (including muscadines), hard to find Asian persimmons and more.  To help you succeed we have an extensive line of organics to keep your plants healthy and productive. Also, If you are new to growing your own produce and would like some advice, we offer several free classes throughout the year on the topic.

Some of the edibles people seek us out for are:

Asian Persimmons (Diospyros kaki)

We carry several varieties of this tree which produces attractive and delicious fruit.  The astringent varieties must be eaten when the fruit has softened and the non-astringent types can be eaten while firm.  All persimmons are very well adapted to our climate.

Figs (Ficus carica)

This is perhaps one of the easiest to grow of all the fruit trees in southeastern Virginia.  It has few insects or disease issues, usually bears fruit easily, plus the tree itself is an attractive addition to any landscape.

Herbs

We don’t limit ourselves to one kind of basil and a few pots of parsley, but carry well over 100 different varieties.  In the spring of the year you can not only find a wide array of traditional herbs, but you can also find such exotics as lemon grass, stevia, patchouli, scented geraniums, pet grass and more.

Jujube, Chinese Date (Ziziphus jujuba)

This unusual fruit can sometimes be difficult to find, but we usually are able to stock a few in the spring and then again in the fall.  The fruit resembles a small brown egg and is sweet and crisp.

Southern Rabbit Eye Hybrid Blueberries (Vaccinium ashei)

This is the only type of blueberry we offer, because it is the best choice for southern climates.  Super easy to grow, they look good and are good for you.  Don’t forget you need two different varieties to for pollination to occur.
