New & Noteworthy Plants

Midnight Bayou Coral Bells (Heuchera x hybrid ‘Midnight Bayou’)
The leaf color on this Villosa hybrid coral bell (these types tolerate our heat and humidity) changes with the seasons—from red-purple to a silvered purple.

Drops of Gold Japanese Holly (Ilex crenata ‘Drops of Gold’)
Who knew that the plain old Japanese holly could be made to look so good? The glossy evergreen foliage has a great golden yellow color that will turn heads.

Soft Caress Mahonia (Mahonia eurybracteata ‘Soft Caress’)
When we first saw this hardy plant we thought it was some sort of exotic palm or fern. However this shade lover is just as easy to grow as regular mahonia, but without the threat of being pricked by sharp foliage.

Pee Dee Gold Ingot Liriope (Liriope muscari ‘Pee Dee Gold Ingot’)
Great in a container or planted in the ground, this choice evergreen liriope forms a neat rounded tuft of strappy golden-chartreuse foliage. In our climate it prefers partial shade and is quite flexible about soil—as long as it well-drained.

Crow Feather Foamflower (Tiarella ‘Crow Feather’)
Bright green leaves are marked with a dark feather pattern during the warmer months, however once cooler temperatures arrive the show begins on this Terra Nova introduction!  You’ll see a “brocaded” color effect with pinks, reds, purples and black.  This perennial can also be grown under black walnut tress.

Minor Black Weigela (Weigela florida ‘Minor Black’)
This recent introduction from Europe forms a small rounded shrub (3’ tall and wide) with dark, bronzy-purple leaves that are reputed to hold their dark color better in our southern heat. Rose-pink trumpet blooms appear in late spring, and may repeat in the fall.

Scarlet’s Peak Holly (Ilex hybrid ‘Scarlet’s Peak’)
Part of the Southern Living Plant Collection this new offering reaches 20’ tall and remains only 3’ wide. Brilliant red berries are a nice contrast to the thornless evergreen leaves, and full sun in well-drained soil is an ideal location for this fast growing shrub.
