Trees

Crape-Myrtle-Smithfield-GardensOur tree department has the most extensive collection in the Hampton Roads area.  We carry many varieties of shade, ornamental and fruit trees, including some of our best natives, as well as unusual exotics.  One tree we love a lot is the Japanese maple, and not only do we have many varieties for sale, we also have some spectacular specimens in our display gardens.  If Hampton Roads had a signature tree it would have to be the crape myrtle, and our selection reaches its peak in late May to early June with over 30 varieties to pick from.  We also carry the three most cold hardy outdoor palms.

Worried about getting your tree home in one piece?  Don’t be, we offer delivery at fair prices, and if you would like us to plant it, we can do that as well.  If you are unsure as to which tree is best for your home, one of our experienced nursery people can help you select the best tree for your situation.

While we carry many different trees, the following are just a few of our favorites:

Fringe Tree (Chionanthus virginicus)

This underutilized tree is one of our showiest spring natives.  In early May it is covered with a shower of fleecy white blooms, and it is very easy to grow.

Loquat (Eriobotrya japonica)

This small evergreen lends a touch of the exotic to local landscapes.  The fragrant flowers usually bloom in December, and in rare years fruit will develop on them in the warmer parts of Hampton Roads.

Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia)

Though it is hardly rare or unusual, especially in Hampton Roads, we love this tree.  It is supremely adapted to our climate, blooms for over two months, has great fall color, and has a beautiful structure as well as showy bark.  We try to keep many varieties in stock at all times of the year.

Flowering Apricot (Prunus mume)
This tree should be prescribed by medical doctors to alleviate the winter blues.  As early as January this tree opens with beautiful pink and very fragrant flowers.

Okame Cherry (Prunus x incamp ‘Okame’)

Gardeners and non-gardeners alike love seeing cherry blossoms in the spring.  Okame is one of our favorite because it is the first one to bloom, usually in March, and because it has a small well-behaved stature with a tight compact canopy.

Chaste Tree (Vitex agnus-castus)
If you have an area that is sunny, hot and dry, and you are having trouble getting anything to grow, this small tree will not disappoint.  On top of that it has blue flowers.
